IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic: Text messages (January – April 2021) with model answers.

Q: How often do you send and receive text messages?
A: Funnily enough, I’m constantly texting people throughout the day. Having said that, whenever I’m at work or with others, I’ll never check my phone or even touch it. I reckon it’s dead rude to do so with others.

Q: Have you ever received a confusing text?
A: Plenty, yeah. Mostly from my bank though. For some reason, they don’t write their SMS updates by using Vietnamese tones whenever they send me one… It blows my mind sometimes, even for native Vietnamese speakers it’s tricky to figure out.

Q: Do you prefer texting or calling your friends?
A: Hmm… If I had to choose between them, I’d probably pick texting. Don’t get me wrong, calling mates can be great at times, but I just don’t want to disturb them as most people I know are busy 24/7. I reckon sending a text is a safer bet, that way they can read it when they’re free and reply when they have time.

Q: Do you use any faces to express your tone or feelings when you send text messages (emoticons)?
A: I always use emojis, haha. They’re so much fun to use, right? To be fair, they’ve actually become a part of my vocabulary 😛

Q: Which is your favourite emoji to use in text messages?
A: It’s gotta be the red love heart one. I reckon it conveys a really friendly tone in my messages which may be lost without it, sometimes I even use it as a response instead of writing ‘yeah’ or ‘okay.

Q: Could you live without texting others?
A: Probably, but I wouldn’t want to. I’ve gone a few weeks without my phone before when I did a ‘device detox’, but the benefits of being able to send messages to mates and family is something I really don’t wanna miss out on.

Q: How do you feel when someone doesn’t reply to your text?
A: Hmm… It doesn’t really bother me as long as they reply eventually. But then again, I wouldn’t want to wait 3 or 4 days to know if someone will meet up over the weekend, I’d find that pretty rude, y’know? For the most part, I really don’t mind whatsoever.
